Walters Art Museum

The Walters Art Museum, a major Baltimore establishment, asked Pentagram to design a new visual identity corresponding to the opening of a new building. As lead designer on this project, I attended all client meetings, designed a range of identity concepts and mock-ups for presentations, and refined materials as a direction was selected.

The typographic mark is inspired by bookplates from their extensive book collections, and the letterforms influenced by the typography from the time of the museum’s founding. The simple wordmark and clean system are supported by a marbled motif, custom generated to reference the original founder's own books.
